August concert on sale

Sound the trumpets – Newcastle’s community orchestra is preparing to present a programme full of noble classics “Fit for a King”.

Orchestra Nova will present its second all ages concert for 2014 at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 24 August at 2pm.

For centuries, composers have been commissioned to commemorate significant royal events with often majestic and grandiose fanfares, marches, concertos and suites. From the marriage of Princess Margaret in 1960, to the ascension to the throne of King Stephan of Hungary in the year 1000, Orchestra Nova will present a collection of pieces inspired by and written for royalty.

The programme will present works written by giants of classical composition such as Beethoven, Elgar and Tchaikovsky and spanning some 150 years.

In Orchestra Nova tradition, the programme promises something for everyone.

The event will also include a raffle and light refreshments can be purchased.

Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 student/pensioner concession. Discounts are available for group bookings. All ages are welcome.

Our 2014 concert series

Orchestra Nova poster-flyer 2014Our 2014 concert series has been announced and our May concert is now on sale!

Orchestra Nova are proud to present what may be the first Australian public performance of a rare 19th Century symphony.

Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor (subtitled “The Bells of Zlonice”), thought by the Czech composer to have been lost or destroyed, was uncovered nearly sixty years after its composition and has only been available in its published form since 1961.

The piece will be performed by Orchestra Nova at its first concert for the year, titled “Rare and Beautiful”. The concert will be held on Sunday 4 May at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre, starting at 2pm.

To complete the May concert programme, the orchestra will also be performing individual works for strings, winds and brass as well as an excerpt from the opera-ballet Mlada by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The event will also include a raffle and light refreshments can be purchased.

Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 student/pensioner concession. Discounts are available for group bookings. All ages are welcome.

Orchestra Nova secures Lake Macquarie council grant

Lake_Macquarie_logoWe were very excited to find out last week that we are the recipients of a small grant from Lake Macquarie City Council. This will assist us with venue costs and printing for our forthcoming concerts.

Being a community (and volunteer-run) organisation, this is a huge help and gives us hope that we can continue to present some great music to people of the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle region. Many thanks to the Council for this assistance.
